‍

St Anne’s RC Church makes repeated use of radial motifs, these are seen in the brickwork around the large dormer windows, in carved sandstone ‘fans’ above doorways, and in the wrought iron gates to the church garden. In the design process, the silhouette of the dormer windows (and the radiating brickwork pattern) was scaled down and cut in stiff fabric, and draped on a mannequin to develop what became the sleeves. The brickwork pattern is represented by strips of waxed silk organza which contain broom petals - one of the first flowers of Spring. In addition to the area of Dennistoun, this garment was intended to represent early spring, the radial motifs throughout communicating sunshine and renewal.
